2024년 초반부터 대진방식과 득점체계 변경 등 경주운영 방식의 변화로 예년보다 흥미진진한 경륜 경주가 이어지고 있다.
가장 큰 이유는 경주 대진방식의 변경이다.

지난해에는 금요경주에서 독립대전을 벌였고, 토요경주를 통해 결승진출자를 뽑는 방식이었다. 하지만 올해부터는 금요일 예선 경주를 통해 결승진출자가 결정되고, 토요일은 독립대전, 일요일은 결승전이 펼쳐지는 방식으로 변경됐다.
지난해까진 선수들이 금요일 독립대전을 통해 자신의 몸 상태를 파악하고, 토요일 치열하게 결승티켓을 따내는 모습이었다면 올해부터는 금요일부터 결승진출을 위한 선수들의 치열한 경쟁과 승부욕 넘치는 경주가 곳곳에서 속출하고 있다.
◆득점체계의 변경
경주 대진방식의 변화와 맞물려 선수들의 득점체계도 달라졌다. 작년 순위 간 ±1점에서 올해 ±2점으로 변화했다.
따라서 작년 점수를 가지고 나오는 선수들과 올해 경주를 뛴 선수들의 점수 차이가 확연하게 드러난다.
이로 인해 줄서기로 끝나는 경주가 아니라 착순점을 올리기 위해 치열하게 경쟁하는 경주가 펼쳐지고 있다.

현재까지 분위기는 28기 신인들의 패기가 돋보이고, 여기에 강급자들의 자존심 대결이 눈에 띈다.
금요일 경주에서는 시드배정을 받은 선수들이 중심인 경주가 양상됐다면 토요일 경주에서는 누구 하나 뺄 수 없을 정도로 혼전 속에서 유리한 고지를 선점하려는 선수들이 과거와는 확연하게 달라진 승부욕을 발견할 수 있다.
예상지 명품경륜 이근우 수석기자는 “새해부터 바뀐 룰로 인해 안정적인 경주 흐름보단 박진감 넘치고 치열한 경주 양상으로 당분간 흘러갈 전망”이라며 “따라서 라인간의 대결 양상도 주목해야겠지만 몸 좋은 선수들의 승부욕, 특히 신인과 강급자들의 몸 상태 변화에 초점을 맞추며 경주를 분석할 필요가 있다”고 조언했다.
